Want to know what exactly is IVF procedure and how beneficial it can be in terms of infertility?

As per WHO, when a couple fails to conceive even after one year of unprotected intercourse, it is defined as infertility. IVF technique, where an egg is combined with sperm outside of a woman's body - "in glass". The procedure involves retrieving the eggs from a woman's ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm, after that the fertilized egg or embryo is transferred to the woman's uterus.

The step-by-step technique of the IVF procedure:

First step

Ovarian Stimulation

The ovarian stimulation process is used to mature multiple eggs for egg retrieval. In this step, an average of 10-20 eggs are usually retrieved for IVF.

Second step

Egg retrieval

Sedation medications are given during the egg retrieval process. A probe is placed into your vagina to identify fertilized eggs and then they are removed from follicles with needles.

Third Step

Fertilization

Once the egg is retrieved they are fertilized with sperm. The IVF specialist can use conventional insemination or Intra-cyto plasma Injection (ICSI) for fertilization. Here in the conventional methods, sperm are placed in a small petri-dish. Then, the sperm is injected into ICSI using a needle and a microscope to check the fertilization.

Fourth Step

Embryo transfer

Once the egg is fertilized, the embryo is selected for transfer and placed inside a thin plastic catheter ( a soft tube) which is passed through the cervix and gently inserted in the uterus.

Fifth step

Pregnancy test

After 12 days of embryo transfer, you will have a pregnancy test. Once it is confirmed, further blood tests and ultrasounds are done to confirm viability.

How IVF technique solve the infertility issues associated with fallopian tube blockage?

Fallopian tubes are the female reproductive organs that are connected to the ovaries and the uterus. whereas, if the fallopian tubes are blocked, the passage for sperm to get to the eggs gets blocked.

The IVF technique is the most suitable treatment for fallopian tube damage. In the IVF procedure, the eggs are directly collected from the ovary and fertilized in a lab, before transferring the embryo to the uterus. Any problem in the fallopian tubes gets bypassed which hence, improves the chances of pregnancy.

IVF technique is also helpful for women suffering from endometriosis and facing difficulty in conceiving -

In this technique, women undergo ovarian stimulation where the eggs are collected and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory setting. Both the eggs and sperm are evaluated for several days to select healthy embryos for embryo transfer.

IVF help with low sperm count and infertility issues -

Though only one sperm is taken to fertilize an egg, the journey of fertilization can be tough. One of the major causes of infertility is low sperm count also known as oligospermia. If your sperm count is low or dips below 15 Million it can make it difficult for you and your partner to conceive.
